Hyaluronic Acid and its Role in Skin Elasticity

Skin CareOne of the most well-established products used in cosmetic augmentation is hyaluronic acid. The acid is a main ingredient of dermal fillers, but it is also popular for use as a moisturiser in lotions and serums.

The acid occurs naturally inside the body. It is the main fluid that keeps the joints lubricated. It is also what keeps the eyeballs round in shape – it is one of the components of the jelly that fills the eyes. It is found in the skin and contributes to skin elasticity.

The Elmsleigh House Dental Clinic mentions that as a person ages, some of the hyaluronic acid is lost. It affects the quality of vision, and joints begin to creak. When the natural hyaluronic acid in the skin depletes, it begins to sag. Skin elasticity is lost, and it becomes dry and wrinkly.

Artificially Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid molecules retain a lot of moisture, which is what gives it its plumping effect when injected. It is a sugary substance. Cosmetic surgeons and some cosmetic dentists inject hyaluronic acid into the skin to tighten it. It removes wrinkles, giving the patient younger looking skin.

Artificial hyaluronic acid may come from varying sources. Chemists typically extract the fluid from rooster combs. Chickens are in great abundance and the combs are merely a by-product of the food production process. The combs are the main animal source for producing clinical hyaluronic acid.

Some types of bacteria also produce the acid. They are grown in the lab and extracted there. As a non-animal source, it is the preferred source for use in cosmetic applications.

Injecting the Hyaluronic Acid

Artificial hyaluronic acid is sterile and injected into key parts of the skin. The doctor or dentist controls the amount of filler by using a syringe and a hypodermic needle.

Injections will not require any form of sedation, so there will be a slight prickling feeling as the needle enters. The dentist will thoroughly clean the area, and fill it with just enough hyaluronic acid gel to minimise wrinkles. He will then massage the area to allow it to spread evenly.

The effect is immediate and will last for months. It is a safe procedure that restores the elasticity of the skin temporarily.
