Understanding the Different Types of Tow Trucks
A lot of people have been led to believe that there is only one type of tow truck that is used when you request for a towing service. This is not true as there are different types of tow trucks to choose from. However, this is largely dependent on the towing company you hire as not all contractors provide this option. It’s essential to note that the success of towing process will depend on the type of truck you choose. Having a variety of options will help you make the right decision when hiring towing services.
Readytowing.com.au lists some of the common types of trucks towing companies use.
Hook and Chain Tow Trucks
These are sling trucks that are used to tow cargo. They work by wrapping the chains around axles and frames of the vehicle to get them towed. Hook and chain tow trucks are not as popular anymore due to the many incidents that happened due to improper towing, this included bumps and scratches that occurred during the tow. Some companies still use them to tow junk wrecked vehicles.
Flatbed Tow Trucks
Also referred to as rollback trucks, these tow trucks have an empty truck bed that is flat at the top. The truck is fitted with hydraulics system to move the bed up and down. It can also be tilted into a ramp which makes it easier when loading cars as one can just drive up the ramp. After the vehicle has been set, the hydraulics is used to make the ramp even. This makes the transportation easy. Flatbed tow trucks are mostly preferred as you don’t have to drag the vehicle to tow it.
Wheel Lift Tow Trucks
Although they are almost similar to hook and chain trucks, wheel-lift tow trucks cause less damage. The only difference is that they use metal yoke in place of chains. The yoke is hooked under the rear or front wheels to tow it. This ensures that the hydraulic lift suspends the rear or front side, making it easier to be lifted from the ground.
So if you’re in need of towing services, remember to contact an experienced towing company that has the right trucks and accessories to tow your car.
